A reminder to check in with yourself

A reminder to check in with yourself

There’s no doubt that a global pandemic can take its toll on people both physically and mentally. It’s important that we are checking in with ourselves and time and effort into our well being. Some days are more challenging than others, but remember that doing something small for yourself can be all the difference.

If you’re ever feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or you just need a break, here’s a list of things you can do.

  1. Breathing exercises: Yes, breathing exercises are not just a band thing! When you’re doing these exercises, notice how you’re breathing and pay attention to how you’re feeling.

2. Go for a walk outside: I know it’s winter and it’s cold, but trust me when I say fresh air does wonders for the brain. Take time to feel the wind blowing through your hair or listen to the sound of snow beneath your feet.

3. Try guided meditation: Similar to breathing exercises, guided meditation gives you some direction. If you’re feeling flustered and all over the place, instructions might be the way to go. Headspace is a popular app, but there are many more out there so that you can find one that’s right for you.

4. Self-care: My self-care is different from your self-care. Here are some examples: take a warm bath, use a facemask, eat a healthy snack, eat a dessert, get an extra hour of sleep, hydrate, do physical activity, catch up with a friend, journal. The list goes on and on, but find what feels good for you.

5. Acknowledge your feelings: Suppressing your emotions can end up affecting you physically. Sometimes you need to process your feelings with another person, someone you trust. Maybe you need to write your thoughts down. Make sure you are acknowledging your feelings in a healthy way.

Times are tough! We know that band is a safe space for a lot of people and it’s challenging being away from an activity that you love and a community that is like a second family. Even though we’re apart right now, just know that you’ve always got your band family!
